For a long time the Korean scientific community refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that it could boost the credibility of the group. Silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.
The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that species are evolving into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time this genetic variation can result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. The change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like the increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their campaign to exclude evolution from high-school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any references to the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?

It is important that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestral Archaeopteryx.
It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing medications, while others are motivated by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs may be less popular, but their beliefs are just as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life came to be on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and also special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution.†It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution in their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. The next step is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 7 and 8 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
